History & Overview
Advanced Fiber Products, (AFP), was founded as a management buyout of the Stratos International optoelectronic packaging business from the public company Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR) in December 2007, allowing a continuation of 25+ years of excellence in the field of fiber optic technologies.
In July 2009, AFP took over the manufacturing rights for Emerson Electrics video component group in Chicago, establishing AFP LLC. In 2010 AFP obtained an Expanded Beam Global VAR license from Emerson and re-entered the Harsh Environment Expanded Beam connectivity market segment.
The company’s roots and founders extend back to the 1980’s and Europe’s first independent mass production fiber harness house, that concentrated on global Telecommunications and Military markets servicing many prestigious end customers such as JDSU, Nortel, British Telecom, Deutsch Telecom, Telefonica, BAE, Marconi and Cable Wireless.
AFP have made significant investments in state of the art clean rooms, modern optical manufacturing equipment, environmental and high pressure test and qualification facilities, IP protection, and added a number of manufacturing licenses.
In the last few years, AFP’s business has grown from its traditional telecom and video broadcast business base into new enterprise, defense, oil-and-gas and subsea/submarine markets.
AFP is partnered with a number of volume manufacturing companies in China, Taiwan, Japan, Europe, and South America, to broaden its capability for ‘best cost’ mass production onshore and offshore, and to expand its technology reach.
Company milestones have included:
- Mass telecom active device termination. Sub-contract connectorization featuring active test and verification in ESD and clean room environments.
- Europe’s first vertically integrated capability featuring design, development and qualification producing high performance fiber assemblies from the optical ‘chip’ through to the connector tail.
- The first independent fiber company to use CO2 laser ablation techniques to lens, cleave and shape fibers for patented sub assemblies.
- The first automated fiber ablation lensing line outside a major OEM.
AFP is partnered with companies in Asia, Central Europe and the America’s to broaden the capability to include ‘best cost’ mass production offshore facilities, TEC (Thermo Electric Cooler) devices, packaging substrates, FVA (fiber V-groove arrays), custom optical assemblies, and leading edge test capabilities.
